Natural skincare lovers everywhere are discovering the power of tallow—but with so many new brands popping up, it’s no surprise people have questions.
As one of Australia's original tallow skincare creators, we’re proud to offer honest answers, real transparency, and high-quality products made with love and experience—not hype.
Here’s everything you need to know about our tallow: from what makes it different to why we do things the way we do.
What’s the difference between tallow and drippings?
Tallow is carefully rendered fat, usually from kidney suet, designed for shelf stability, purity, and skincare use. Drippings are the leftover fats from cooked meats and often contain burnt bits, water, and seasonings.
If a product smells like a roast dinner or leaves your skin greasy, it’s likely made from drippings—not true skincare-grade tallow.
Why is grass-fed and finished tallow better than grain-fed?
Cows that are grass-fed and grass-finished produce cleaner, more nutrient-rich fat.
Their tallow contains:
Omega-3s and CLA
Higher levels of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
Lower inflammatory compounds
Grain-fed cows often accumulate toxins and lack the skin-supportive nutrients we value. That’s why we use only 100% Australian grass-fed and finished tallow.
Why do some tallow products/brands smell bad?
That strong beefy or greasy smell? It usually means:
Poor rendering (too hot or rushed)
Use of non-suet fats or drippings
Oils that have gone rancid
We’ve refined our rendering process over years. Our tallow is triple-filtered, slow-rendered, and never mixed with filler oils, making it nearly scentless in its natural form.
Why does tallow harden during cooler months?
Like coconut oil or shea butter, tallow naturally hardens when the temperature drops. This is completely normal and doesn’t mean anything’s wrong.
Just warm a small amount between your fingers, and it will melt beautifully into your skin.
Why is some tallow yellow and other batches white?
Color variation is normal and depends on:
The cow’s diet (more beta carotene = golden tone)
The time of year
The specific fat used (suet is usually paler)
It’s all-natural and doesn’t affect the quality or benefits of the tallow.
Why is tallow so good for healing skin?
Tallow is bioavailable, meaning it closely matches the structure of human skin oils (sebum).
It contains:
Stearic acid to repair skin
Oleic acid to deeply moisturise
Palmitic acid to support barrier health
Vitamins A, D, E, and K for cellular repair
Tallow supports healing from eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, TSW, and more—without clogging pores or irritating sensitive skin.
Why doesn’t your standard tallow have added oils?
Because your skin doesn’t need them.
Our standard whipped tallow is made from 100% pure tallow and nothing else. No essential oils. No carrier oils. No fillers.
This makes it suitable for even the most sensitive skin types—including babies and those healing from TSW.
In fact, we coined the tagline “eczema and sensitive skin safe” years ago. If you’ve seen that on other brands recently... let’s just say, imitation is the highest form of flattery. 😉
Do I need to refrigerate tallow?
Nope! Our tallow is shelf-stable and will last 6–12 months without refrigeration. Just store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Refrigerating is optional but not necessary unless you live in extreme heat.
Can I use tallow on broken or open skin?
Yes—but only the unscented version.
Our pure whipped tallow is often used on:
Open eczema
Cracked skin
TSW flare-ups
Nappy rash or minor grazes
Essential oils, even natural ones, should be avoided on broken skin unless directed by a practitioner.
Why do you have a 2-week turnaround time?
Unlike mass-produced brands, we handcraft every jar fresh to order using traditional methods.
We’re also the only tallow brand we know of offering:
Multiple scents & sizes
Tallow scrubs, lip balms, baby balms & more
Natural candles made from tallow & beeswax
This level of care and variety means we ask for a 2-week turnaround, especially during high demand. It’s worth the wait.
Why are your jars label-free?
We don’t include printed labels for two simple reasons:
Sustainability – Less waste and fewer chemicals. You can repurpose the jars!
Affordability – We pass the savings onto you by skipping unnecessary packaging costs.
Is it safe for kids and sensitive skin?
Absolutely. Our standard unscented tallow contains just one ingredient:
Tallow.
No oils. No fragrances. No potential irritants.
It’s safe for:
Babies
Pregnant mamas
Eczema and TSW-prone skin
Highly reactive and allergy-prone skin
Our products are trusted by hundreds of families because they’re made with purpose,l and intent, not trends.
We always recommend patch test first, even with pure ingredients.
Apply a small amount of tallow to your inner forearm or behind your ear and wait 24–48 hours.
While our standard whipped tallow is just one ingredient and safe for most skin types, everyone’s skin is unique.
This is especially important if you’re:
Trying tallow for the first time
Reacting to other products
Using scented tallow
What essential oils do you use?
When we do use essential oils, we use only pure, therapeutic-grade oils—no synthetic fragrances or overpowering scents.
Each batch contains gentle, skin-safe levels, suitable for most people.
Prefer a stronger scent? Feel free to add your own essential oils at home—our unscented tallow is a perfect base.
How do you ship orders—and what happens if something breaks?
We ship Australia-wide via AusPost with full tracking so you can follow your order every step of the way.
Although technically we’re not responsible for parcels once they leave us, we believe everyone should receive their order, in one piece, every time.
That’s why we offer our Recraft Policy for lost, damaged, or broken items.
Just contact us, and we’ll make it right.
